Even if he can’t spell, Yung Joc sure knows how to make a debut: The ATL rapper’s first album, last year’s New Joc City, bowed at #3 on the Billboard albums chart. Now Yung is back with another word you won’t find in Webster’s — “Hustlenomics” — and a few upperclassmen in tow: Diddy, Snoop, Game and Bun B. Notorious B.I.G.'s epic Life After Death lives strong 10 years later

Ten years ago, on March 25, 1997, the Notorious B.I.G. released his epic double-LP, Life After Death. Probably the closest thing to listening to Biggie on the album is watching Kobe Bryant score 81 points against the Toronto Raptors. Biggie was effortless, flawless, inexorable.

By the time Life After Death was finished, shortly before Biggie’s death on March 9 of that year, there was no doubt that he was the king and that the rest of the world was starting to get lapped. Nobody in rap was making more hits.

VMA party week kicks off with Diddy

If Diddy’s party on Monday night was any indication of what VMA week holds in store, don’t expect to see many stars out walking around during the day. They’re going to need plenty of sleep, because the nights are already getting pretty wild.

Diddy hosted the week’s first major jump-off, celebrating the launch of superstar stylist June Ambrose’s book, “Effortless Style,” which comes out on September 26. Ambrose, of course, has helped just about all the big names in hip-hop and R&B get fly. Held at Tenjune (get it?) in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, the party’s guest list included hip-hop and R&B’s two most famous power couples, two of the genres’ greatest producers, and also the rocker who brought sexy back almost 30 years ago. Who’s that? Sing along now: “If you want my body and you think I’m sexy …”

Press Play on Diddy's October LP

Diddy has scrapped the PDV (PD Five) album name he’s been working with for the past year. The official title for his October 3 release is now simply Press Play, an ode to Puff’s vow to not overhype his LP.

“I’m known for dramatic titles — ‘Unforgivable’ the cologne, [the albums] No Way Out, Forever, The Saga Continues,” he said yesterday in his Daddy’s House Studios. “I’ve evolved a little bit. Studied the game, been a part of it, had success. It all comes down to pressing play. After you press play, it’s gonna make or break you in this game. That’s where I’m at. We about to press play on October 3, and hopefully I can make people feel good.”
