Diddy does it again

Diddy's Bad Boy/Atlantic bow, Press Play, appears ready to top next week's HITS album chart, though the projected total of between 175-185k can't be considered a triumphant bow. His last album, 1999's Forever, sold 205k on its way to a total of 1.4m, back when he was still known as Puff Daddy. That's what our vast network of retail contacts around this wunnerful land of ours still taking our phone calls tell us, based on their own one-day sales reports.

AllMusic reviews Press Play

Diddy spent the five years since the release of his previous solo album making (and shelving) a gospel album, dabbling (or flailing) in dance music, running in the New York City Marathon, developing a perfume called (almost unbelievably) Unforgivable, and undoubtedly doing many other important things. His Bad Boy empire settled into a severe lull until the summer of 2006, when Yung Joc’s “It’s Going Down,” Cassie’s “Me&U,” and the Danity Kane album revived the label.

Sean Combs hasn’t changed his name since settling on Diddy, but he has apparently changed his music.

“Press Play,” out today, is said to be a rhythm and blues record in the style of a John Legend or Alicia Keys. Diddy sings for the first time and, more significantly, didn’t use samples from established hits. “Press Play” is all original music, with tracks co-produced and co-written by the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell and Timbaland.

Diddy: Man Of All Trades

Jorteh Senah from BallerStatus interviewed Diddy. Here’s the full interview:

Diddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, Puff Daddy, Sean John. Sean Combs has had so many names, but the titles he adorns are even more excessive: CEO, entrepreneur, activist, marathon-runner, actor, producer, rapper and now, get this—singer. Excess should be his middle name or better yet another alias because whatever Diddy does he does B.I.G. like his late, great comrade.

Press Play on Diddy's October LP

Diddy has scrapped the PDV (PD Five) album name he’s been working with for the past year. The official title for his October 3 release is now simply Press Play, an ode to Puff’s vow to not overhype his LP.

“I’m known for dramatic titles — ‘Unforgivable’ the cologne, [the albums] No Way Out, Forever, The Saga Continues,” he said yesterday in his Daddy’s House Studios. “I’ve evolved a little bit. Studied the game, been a part of it, had success. It all comes down to pressing play. After you press play, it’s gonna make or break you in this game. That’s where I’m at. We about to press play on October 3, and hopefully I can make people feel good.”
