Diddy responds to stink over cologne ads

Advertisements for Diddy’s new men’s fragrance, Unforgivable, have not been well received by some retailers, and now Diddy is responding to comments about the ad’s sexual content.

“People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” Diddy said via a statement. In addition to being banned from billboard space on Harlem, NY’s 125th Street, many retailers across the country, particularly in the more conservative Midwest and Bible Belt regions, have refused to display the advertisement as well.

Unforgivable’s parent company, Estee Lauder, has responded to the objections by reshooting a more store friendly ad, but the original is still being run in magazines and on billboards.

“We believe the ads represent the true spirit of Unforgivable,” Estee Lauder’s Global President John Dempsey offered, also via statement. “This fragrance is about a man who lives his life with passion and unapologetically, we respect Sean Combs’ creative perspective and support him in his vision. While it’s unfortunate that some retailers were so uncomfortable with that much sexual presence, we respect their decision to do what is right for them.”

Sean John Fragrances is a division of Make-Up Art Cosmetics, Inc, which markets and manufactures a host of skin and hair care products from brands including M.A.C., Aveda, Michael Kors and Bobbi Brown.
